Remembering Lichuan 遇见王沥川 Part 1

Remembering Lichuan (遇见王沥川) is a tear-jerking love story about an iron-willed English interpreter refusing to breakup with her disabled Chinese-Swiss architect boyfriend. Their famous last word is “No.” That one syllable word conveys the whole spectrum of human emotions and the entirety of their relationship. Get your tissues out because you will need them.

The best part of this drama is watching him looking at her. It’s so, so, so sweet.

Which only makes the other moments all the more heartbreaking.

Lichuan: You have to move on.
Xiaoqiu: No.

On the surface, Xie Xiaoqiu looks like a psycho ex-girlfriend. She emails Wang Lichuan everyday for 4 years straight telling him how much she loves him and pleading for him to come back to her. Later on, she goes to work for his company and cyberstalks him on company communication. But in reality, Lichuan is the one who can’t let go.
Remembering Lichuan

He is the king of mixed messages. His mouth says no but his action says yes. He tells Xiaoqiu to leave but his body language says “don’t go.” He begs her to stop but never made any real effort to deter her. He says he doesn’t love her anymore but carries their photo around in his wallet.
Remembering Lichuan

Like the time when she tried to jump him. How physically weak could he possibly be that he couldn’t push her off him? C’mon!

And he is acting all perplexed as to why Xiaoqiu can’t move on… Seriously, dude?

Xiaoqiu/Lichuan love affair started because Lichuan suddenly found himself with extra free time. His brother/boss had ordered him to get a life and threatened to ship him back to Zurich if he continued his workaholic schedule.

Enters Xiaoqiu, a college girl who tried to dodge his brother’s wrath by pretending to be someone else. She was unpredictable, outrageous, completely different from his monotonous existence. Lichuan couldn’t take his eyes off her.

Don’t ask. Curiosity will get you killed.

So they started hanging out.

Which led to them going out. Every indication suggested that he was planning to pop the question.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan. His brother delivered a news he never wanted to hear, especially now. His cancer was back and he must immediately return to Zurich for surgery.

That night Lichuan went to see Xiaoqiu. He didn’t say anything about his illness. All he did was ask her to breakfast.
Remembering Lichuan
Xiaoqiu: Are you alright?
Lichuan: I’m fine. I’ll see you tomorrow.

(This is point when “Lichuan’s Mixed Message” first started. He drags her out of bed in the middle of the night only to ask her in person to come over for breakfast. Clearly, he wants to see her face and breakfast is only an excuse. He then says he will see her tomorrow but holds tight to her hand like tonight is the last time he will ever get to see her again. Xiaoqiu, being a caring, loving girlfriend, picks up on his body language and asks him if anything is wrong. He tells her nothing’s the matter, then gives her a smile that looks more like he is holding back the tears.)

Next morning, he prepared an elaborate breakfast for her and she helped him pack for his “business trip.”

They kissed goodbye in front of the airport security checkpoint. When he reached the airport lounge, he called her. And, he broke up with her.

He simply told her to forget about him and live a happy life. Then he cut off all contact with her. No explanation whatsoever.
