Obsessed 著魔

Taiwan became the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage in May 2017. As result, I expect there will be many BL/GL Taiwanese dramas going mainstream. BL webdrama gets a bad rap for having super cheesy, pretentious, terrible acting and/or plot that is awkward if not painful to watch. However, HISt♂ry series’ Obsessed (著魔) came highly recommended. Granted, it contains many of the pitfalls of small production and their storyline is nothing to write home about, their main characters, however, more than make up for the drama’s shortcomings with their sizzling chemistry. I can watch them all day long doing whatever-it-is-they-do-together.

The chemistry mostly comes from Shao Yichen trying to deny his attraction to Jiang Jinteng. Not because he is playing hard to get. Rather, he is a man on a mission to not fall in love with his ex again. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

What do you do when your boyfriend of 9 years breaks up with you to marry a woman? The out-of-nowhere breakup was so devastating, Shao Yichen ran away in tears and got hit by a car… and died.

Yes. He died, then reborn 9 years earlier (Or, time traveled? Or, landed on a parallel universe?) before his boyfriend Jiang Jinteng ever met him. This time around, he was determined to have nothing to do with that no good liar. It could be hard to do considering he was secretly in love with the said liar since high school. Like a little stalker.

He started by swapping out his glasses for contact lenses. Call him a dork no more. Then, he burned his precious Jiang Jinteng fan scrapbook with incantation to ward off his ex-boyfriend (um… future boyfriend).

Not that it mattered. Because fate would have them meet one way or another. There was no avoiding Jiang Jinteng.

But it didn’t mean he couldn’t try. He resolutely rejected Jinteng’s every advance.

Then in one of their pull-n-tug sessions, Jinteng hit his head against a tree and lost his memory (a drama trope that works wonders.) When Yichen saw the blood gushing out from Jinteng’s head, his distressed was evident. Even being reborn couldn’t obliterate the fact that he loved that man more than his own life.

As the culprit of Jinteng’s amnesiac head injury, Yichen was ordained to be his caretaker. The reason was valid. They couldn’t find Jinteng’s parents, so naturally, he was to live with Yichen until his condition improved.

Lies, all lies. Except for the laceration, it was a scheme devised by Jinteng and his frenemy Lei Chongjun to entrap Yichen. And Yichen was gullible enough to fall for it.

Yichen was furious when he found out. Mostly at himself for getting duped again. And for being still very much in love with Jinteng, despite of everything. He raged, he cried, ultimately, he gave in. Future heartbreak be damned.

I like how the drama uses parallel scenes to connect the characters. In Ep02, Jinteng unobtrusively observed Yichen looking for a book. In Ep03, Yichen quietly watched Jinteng reading a book.

As for the “other woman”, while the acting could be better, she was quite likable. Cai Yijun loves who she loves and she is honest with her feelings. And, she expects no less from others. Without her, Jinteng and Yichen would still be running in circles. She was so cute when she grabbed onto Ze Gang and said that if Jinteng were to beat her up for exposing his lie, she expected Ze Gang to take at least one punch for her. After all, she had fed him a year worth of breakfast.

Lastly, I thought Yichen’s best friend, Li Mubai, had asked the most important question in the whole drama: Why weren’t you more careful when crossing the street?
